(And hey, while I’ve always wanted to be a singer… relax.)
I’ve always wanted to be a singer.
You know, mic in hand, dramatic expression, people nodding like they understand the lyrics.
But don’t worry. I will not be the leading singer here. My friends can relax.
Because instead, five actual musicians are arriving at Aavya for a five-day music residency to create a song from scratch. A singer-songwriter, two guitarists, a percussionist, and a music producer, all stepping into the same space, same days, same slightly unpredictable creative energy. And I get to be nearby.
What’s Actually Happening
This is called 5 Kalakaar: a live music residency where artists don’t show up with finished songs. They show up with instruments, ideas, moods, and the willingness to see what happens.
Over five days at Aavya, they’ll write, jam, experiment, stare into the distance thoughtfully, and slowly figure out what their song wants to be. It’ll be recorded in our studio and performed live on the final night.
Guests here won’t just hear the result.
They’ll see the in-between.
The wrong notes.
The good ideas.
The long pauses.
The “wait… play that again!” moments.
This is music before it behaves.
My Role in All This
I’m just Ashish. The guy hosting. The guy hovering around hoping they might let me sneak in one line. Maybe sing one word. Maybe just clap in rhythm and look serious.
Because yes, at one point I was known (unofficially) as the most irritating singer in Tapovan. That story deserves its own blog, ideally after I improve slightly.
But if I get to be part of even the tiniest bit of this song, that’ll be enough.
And Honestly…
Being around people like this, musicians trying things, laughing, figuring it out, just makes me feel a little more alive. There’s energy in that. Movement. A bit of chaos, a bit of joy.
Whether the song turns out brilliant or just “interesting,” we’re going to have a good time making it.
